Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was born around 1918 in Abu Dhabi, the youngest son of Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who ruled Abu Dhabi from 1922 to 1926. At that time, the emirate was impoverished and underdeveloped, relying mainly on fishing, pearl diving, and simple agriculture in scattered inland oases.
Despite the simplicity of life, even for the ruling family, Sheikh Zayed was always eager to seek knowledge. In his youth, he learned reading and writing, focusing on Islamic teachings. He also traveled with Bedouin tribesmen into the desert, acquiring deep insights into the lives of the people and understanding the environment they inhabited. His passion for the desert and falconry remained with him throughout his life.
Early Leadership
In 1946, Sheikh Zayed became the Ruler’s Representative in Abu Dhabi’s Eastern Region, where he skillfully managed Al Ain and its surrounding areas. Despite limited resources, he began developing the region by personally funding the first modern school in the emirate and revising water ownership rights to ensure a more equitable distribution, which spurred agricultural growth and transformed Al Ain into a key trading center.
The Dream That Became Reality
In August 1966, Sheikh Zayed became the Ruler of Abu Dhabi, with a clear vision for the emirate’s development. With oil revenues beginning to flow in the early 1960s, he embarked on a massive development program to improve infrastructure, building schools, hospitals, and roads. Sheikh Zayed’s leadership was instrumental in forming the United Arab Emirates, which was officially established on December 2, 1971, uniting seven emirates into a single federation.
His tireless efforts in fostering unity were not just about forming a nation, but about building consensus among the rulers of the other emirates. He continually sought collective agreement, a value he deeply embraced from the Bedouin traditions he had witnessed in his early years.
Leadership with Compassion and Tolerance
Throughout his reign, Sheikh Zayed’s philosophy centered on using the country’s wealth for the benefit of its people, men and women alike. He firmly believed in the importance of educating women and integrating them into the workforce. He was also known for his tolerance and firm stance against extremism and violence, emphasizing that Islam is a religion of mercy and tolerance.
On the international stage, under Sheikh Zayed’s leadership, the UAE played an important role in peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts, providing aid to those in need in places like the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries.
A Lasting Legacy
Sheikh Zayed passed away in 2004, leaving behind a lasting legacy as the Father of the Nation. His son, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, succeeded him as President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, continuing the vision of development and upholding the core values his father established.
Sheikh Zayed’s legacy continues to live on in every corner of the UAE, through the charitable organizations and humanitarian initiatives he founded, which still provide support and development assistance to people across the globe.
